You may have noticed I haven’t been in touch for a couple of days. I came down with a nasty old flu on Friday afternoon last week and just managed to get back into the land of the living today.

Damn!

I thought I’d beaten those Antibiotics this winter for the first time.

Anyway, there’s always next winter.

I will not give up in my quest to go through winter with my health fully intact.

Anyway, enough of my whingeing.

Today I want to talk about the concept of optimism versus pessimism.

When I first started out in business, I was naive. Some people think I still am.

But back then I was REALLY naive – expected everything to work. Expected to be incredibly successful in like 6 months or something. I was quickly brought back down to earth with a THUD.

The problem with too much short term optimism is everything doesn’t always work. And if you hold onto the thought that it will, you will quickly become discouraged and depressed.

Better to expect it. Then you don’t get disappointed when it comes.

Today I have learnt to be a short term pessimist, knowing that in many cases things will NOT work out as I initially planned. And that this is okay.

Why? Because I am a long term optimist.

The trick is that you need to be smart enough to know when you get lucky – to see the opportunities which come up and leverage off them.

For instance, I have had many more campaigns that I have tried for myself fail than succeed. But the difference is the ones that do succeed I can run for year after year after year, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars… (i.e. building a database and sending out regular emails like this one)
… whereas the ones that don’t succeed might cost $100… $200… $500… or $1,000. And they quickly get…

TOSSED IN THE TRASH.

The trick is trying a lot of things and learning from everyone you can so you don’t make unnecessary and costly mistakes and can build marketing campaigns which generate predictable funnels for attracting and keeping new customers.

And starting in September I will be one of 10 mentors who are going to share what we have learnt about marketing businesses for maximum results for our efforts, and still leave time for precious things in life such as family and friends.

The Healthy Marketing Telesummit starts on September 7 and costs nothing to participate. You can listen online, or even phone in and ask your most pressing questions live on the call. If you are unable to make the live calls, you can listen to the replay.
