From networking to the latest internet craze and every other thing like it.
So which one of them is best?
Truth is, they will all fall flat on their face unless you harness one skill.
So what is that skill?
Well, here’s a little experiment you might want to conduct one day (in a safe environment and not around children)…
1. Take a pile of old newspapers and put them in direct sunlight.
2. Grab a cheap magnifying glass
3. Move the magnifying glass around all over the newspaper and notice what happens. Not much, right. Even if you focus it for short periods and then move it, you won’t notice anything.
4. Now try pointing that light in one single place and allow the sun to penetrate through it.
5. Hole the focus of the light for long enough and guess what will happen?
6. That’s right – the entire paper will be ablaze.
And that is the most important skill one can employ in business.
So forget about the latest whizbang idea and get focused.
I can tell you this from experience.
Before I met my wife, I owed more money than I had. I lived in a crappy little apartment share house with all sorts of unsavoury characters.
I think Harry Emerson Fosdick said it best…
“No horse gets anywhere until he is harnessed. No steam or gas ever drives anything until it is confined. No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunnelled. No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated, disciplined”
The question is: what should you focus on?
In my experience there is no more important or leveraged area than your own business. And there is no more important skill you can develop to grow your business than the art of getting new customers.
