How do you get 5,000 people to strip off in one of  Sydney’s most prominent locations in the wee hours of the morning without charging you a cent.

It’s easy.

Just ask US photographer, Spencer Tunick, who arrived in Sydney last week and announced his plan to cover the steps surrounding the Sydney Opera house with a sea of flesh.

And to top it off, it was one of the coldest days of the year to date.

So let’s take a look at the psychology here: why did everyone do it?

Honestly, I have no idea.

But I am going to take a guess:

1. The Rocking Chair Moment: because in their rocking chair when they chat with their grandchildren in years to come, they want to be able to say “I did that.”

2. The sense of community: With 5,000 other naked people surrounding you, it’s hard to feel uncomfortable, isn’t it? I mean it’s very different to sprinting down Pitt Street in the nude during lunch hour.

3. The adventure: It’s certainly something different and would probably give you a rush of blood equal to jumping out of an aeroplane.

4. Fun: Based on reports I have read the atmosphere was jovial, with plenty of laughter, with people clapping and waving at ferries for a period of 90 minutes.

And not only did Spencer Tunick get 5,000 people to join him, he gained massive publicity at the same time.

Can you do this in your business?

I believe we all can – the publicity part that is, perhaps not getting 5,000 people naked ;-)

Richard Branson is a master at this…

He dressed up in a bridal gown to promote his apparel company, Virgin Brides.

He descended into Times Square by crane from atop the Bertelsmann building nearly buck-naked (only wearing a body stocking) except for a cellphone to show Virgin Mobile had nothing to hide.

And he’s conducted plenty of other publicity stunts over the years ;-)

Can you get publicity for your business? Is it possible to get free advertising for yourself too?

In the words of Bob The Builder: YES YOU CAN!

And there’s no better guy to show you how to do it than the guy who sold the MCG, Pete Williams.
