I was watching the DVD’s of Mad Men recently and one of the copywriters said to the super-cool creative director, Don Draper… “Seks sells, right?”
And he said…
Wrong.
Then he continued with…
“Helping people to feel is what sells”
Interesting, huh.
And that’s the secret which truly distinguishes good copy from so-so copy.
Bringing the “feeling” into it.
And those feelings can range from…
Anger
Sadness
Betrayal
Frustration
Greed
Urgency
Shame
Security
Surprise
Relaxation
Powerlessness
Love
Passion
Happiness
Hope
You might want to print out this list and keep it next to you every time you write an ad or sales letter to jog your memory.
Here’s a handful of examples of copy written to stimulate certain emotions…
“Don’t let self-righteous health sadists feed you any more lies… just give your body what it’s been begging for” (anger)
“The golden touch for getting the best of everything for less” (greed)
“Want to stop worrying about unpredictable constipation that comes and goes?” (hope). “Trust me, this will be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made” (hope)
“Don’t let your loved ones suffer these painful indignities one more day” (shame)
“Imagine how amazing you’ll feel as the money starts to roll in” (relaxed)
Interesting, isn’t it?
The bottom line is copywriting is far deeper than what initially meets the eye. And if you want to learn all of my secrets all at once and learn how to write killer ads and sales letters for yourself, you really should get your hands on http://www.copywritingthatsells.com.au/cashflow
